Created in 1996, Contact is one of New Zealand's largest listed companies with over 550,000 customers across electricity, natural gas and LPG products, supported by a team of  over 1000 employees located up and down the country, all working to help New Zealanders live more comfortably with energy. Our focus is on delivering great value, great products and great service to customers. We currently offer electricity, natural gas and bottled LPG generated through our 11 hydro, geothermal  and gas-fired power stations.
Over our 20 year history we’ve built a flexible and largely renewable portfolio of electricity generation assets. We own and operate 11 power stations and produce 80-85% of our electricity from our renewable hydro and geothermal stations. Our natural gas and diesel fired power stations operate to ensure the lights stay on for New Zealanders when intermittent renewable sources like hydro and wind plant cannot operate.
Our new Te Mihi geothermal power station is part of Contact's dedication to providing New Zealander's energy needs in a safe, reliable and efficient manner. Te Mihi uses heat from deep inside the earth to generate electricity. Te Mihi power station has a 166 megawatt (MW) of generating capacity, enough to power over 160,000 Kiwi homes and is located on the Wairakei geothermal field, northwest of Taupo.

Tenon is New Zealand’s largest producer of defect-free, appearance grade radiata pine products, supplying growing markets in the USA, Europe, Asia and Australasia. We maintain access to one of the largest FSC®-certified pine plantation forests in the world - and our manufacturing plants have also been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council®.

Tenon’s processing facilities, located in Taupo, New Zealand, where they have operated continuously for over 50years. Taupo is a strategic location - close to high-quality forest resources and major export ports, with access to a high temperature geothermal resource. The site is a specialised high-value clearwood production facility - with over half its sawn timber output being used on-site in further manufacturing.

Our premium quality pruned pine is shaped into appearance-grade timber, clearpine boards, exterior wood products, and mouldings for the demanding North American, European and Australian and markets.

Natures flame

Nature’s Flame was established in 2002 in Christchurch and the Taupo operation was built and commissioned in 2009.

Wood pellet fuel from Nature’s Flame is a premium heating fuel made from waste wood shavings and sawdust, sourced from New Zealand’s extensive plantation forestry sector and the timber processing industry.

Nature’s Flame wood pellets are essentially compressed sawdust parcels that are uniform in size, shape and specification, and are held together with 100% naturally occurring lignin, which also gives them their shiny appearance.

The end use of the wood pellets produced range from domestic heating appliances to industrial process heating and electricity generation.

Nature’s Flame holds FSC® and Biogro certification and is New Zealand’s only pellet manufacturer independently audited and certified to European and ISO Standards by Din Certco of Germany to the DINplus certification scheme.

Geo40 has developed process technology for the removal of silica from geothermal fluids that have already been used for power generation. At Contact Energy’s Ohaaki geothermal site Geo40 has completed pilot plant trials and have now built a world first commercial demonstration plant. The technology comprises two main sub-systems: extraction and processing. The extraction plant is located adjacent to the geothermal power plant and extracts silica from the reinjection fluids. The extracted silica is concentrated in solution to a 10% weight concentration. The fluids, now less the silica, are reinjected into the underground reservoir through the existing reinjection wells or can be used to extract further minerals and generate further electricity prior to reinjection. In the case of the commercial demonstration plant, the filtrate is being supplied to a local ngawha where it is restoring the flow back to a clear natural hot spring that has been used by local iwi for generations. The concentrate is grown to a range of colloid sizes of between 8nm and 16nm in diameter and the concentration of the silica is increased to 30-40% by weight. Product is shipped directly from the processing plant to the customer (distributor) site.
