International Forest Industry Advisor, Argentina

Evan Shield, an Australian, began his professional career more than 60 years ago … He was employed in Papua New Guinea and Tasmania before commencing a consulting practice in 1982.

His work as a consultant has had a sharp focus on the 1,024 species / sub-species Australians count as Eucalypts (members of the genera Eucalyptus, Corymbia and Angophora). Until 2005, that included the utilization of Eucalypts for pulpwood. However, the productivity potential of plantation-grown Eucalypts – discovered when undertaking a project on Uruguay in 1992 – led to specialisation in the silviculture and utilization of Eucalypts for higher-value products.

Evan’s work in this area has included projects in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Chile as well as Angola, Kenya, South Africa, Lao P.D.R., Malaysia, China, P.N.G. and Australia. Since 2005, Evan has made his home in Argentina. Today, his ambitions are simple : (i) to see the Southern Cone become an important source of Eucalypt veneer-based E.W.P. for global markets and (ii) to learn to spell "pine".
