Director, Salwood Asia Pacific Pty Ltd, Canberra, Australia

Stephen is a forester and development specialist who runs his own consulting business, Salwood Asia Pacific Pty Ltd. He is an Asia-specialist and has worked continuously in Asia for over 48 years: 11 years long-term experience with community forestry programs in Laos, Nepal, Sri Lanka and with the China Eucalypt Research Centre in China and via many smaller projects in Africa, the Asia Pacific and South America. He had a long career with Australia’s national research agency, CSIRO where he was team leader specialising in the international domestication and utilisation of Australia’s trees, mainly eucalypts and acacias. His primary professional interests are management and marketing of planted trees, with a particular passion for production of commercial wood from smallholdings. He has a BSc (For) and M. For. from The Australian National University and is a Research Fellow with the University of Melbourne. He was a long-term member of FAO’s Panel of Experts on Forestry Genetic Resources and was a long-term Board Member of the Asia Pacific Forestry Network (APFNet). His work has been recognised by the Governments of China, Vietnam (twice), the Chinese Forestry Society, the Commonwealth Forestry Association, the Institute of Foresters of Australia and CSIRO.
